The story
Welcome to CHVENIA’s digital story world. These are original fictional adults, crafted with AI; their ages, work, friendships and adventures are authored fiction. The Upstairs Room is their shared story setting, not a real CHVENIA venue.
Sandro’s earliest recordings were mostly wind, his own breathing and a cousin asking whether the machine was on. He kept them. The accidental material always seemed more alive than his carefully announced performances, although it took years to admit that a mistake could be useful without becoming an excuse not to practise.
He met Nino in a school recording club where she wanted quiet and he wanted to test every switch. They still work that way. For her entrance archive, he records the pause before a story as carefully as the voice itself. He is determined not to turn somebody else’s ordinary life into decorative atmosphere, even when that means discarding a sound he loves.
Tako’s movement films give his restlessness a shape. She asks for a clean rhythm; he arrives with footsteps, a loose window catch and three possible endings. Dachi helps build small resonant wooden objects, none of which they agree to call instruments until they survive being carried downstairs. Their most promising prototype currently sounds better upside down.
A familiar refrain feels to Sandro like a conversation that began before he entered the room. The Suliko detail stays quiet because he dislikes explaining every feeling at full volume. Yet his own unfinished pieces occupy an increasingly noisy folder. He can find the right sound for someone else’s film; choosing an ending for his own is the decision he keeps avoiding.
What drives them
Finish a short sound portrait of a city morning, made from listening closely rather than announcing a grand theme.
What gets in the way
He wants to preserve every possibility, but a piece only becomes shareable when he finally lets the other endings go.
Everyday rituals
- Records thirty seconds before speaking
- Taps a rhythm on the stair rail
- Names drafts after the weather, badly
Their way of wearing it
A considered standing collar, soft layers and a burgundy word; nothing should rustle louder than the conversation.
People in their world
- Nino
His school friend and archive collaborator; their familiar argument is whether a useful silence exists.
- Tako
The movement director who makes him turn beautiful noises into an actual beginning, middle and end.
- Dachi
His wooden-sound-object accomplice; Dachi builds the box, Sandro discovers its most inconvenient note.
The current chapter
He has given the morning portrait one filename and one ending. The difficult part is pressing send before inventing a better version.
Where the story could go
- A recording contains a familiar voice nobody remembers being in the room.
- Dachi’s new sound box only works when carried by two people at different speeds.
- Nino asks for his own voice in the archive, with no music underneath.
