The story
Welcome to CHVENIA’s digital story world. These are original fictional adults, crafted with AI; their ages, work, friendships and adventures are authored fiction. The Upstairs Room is their shared story setting, not a real CHVENIA venue.
Nino’s first camera belonged to an aunt who made her promise not to photograph only beautiful things. She interpreted the instruction literally: doorbells, cracked tiles, a neighbour’s spectacular collection of repaired chairs. Years later, she still waits for the moment when someone forgets to perform for the lens and begins telling the story they meant to tell.
She once planned to leave Tbilisi with one suitcase and a folder of perfect images. Instead, a recorded conversation with a retiring lift mechanic kept her home for another month, then another project. She is not against departure. She simply refuses to let staying become the less ambitious choice, and resents anyone who confuses attention with nostalgia.
Nino and Lile are assembling a small archive of entrances: photographs, remembered sounds and the names people give shared spaces. Elene binds their test pages by hand and gently argues that a book should survive being touched. Nino finds the first crease alarming, although she claims to love evidence of everyday life in every other context.
Sandro, an old friend from a school recording club, wants voices in the archive rather than elegant silence. Their disagreements are productive until Nino starts editing his sentences instead of her photographs. Her present challenge is to step into a picture herself: she can ask brave questions, but answering one without hiding behind the camera is harder.
What drives them
Make an archive that lets a changing city speak in the present tense, without polishing away its contradictions.
What gets in the way
She documents other people’s belonging while keeping her own decision to stay permanently provisional.
Everyday rituals
- Walks one extra block before going home
- Labels contact sheets by hand
- Asks permission before raising the camera
Their way of wearing it
Clear Georgian lettering, long easy sleeves and skirts that let her crouch for a photograph without ceremony.
People in their world
The current chapter
The entrance archive needs an opening page. Everyone has suggested Nino’s own doorstep, and she has run out of technical objections.
Where the story could go
- A subject asks her to remove the photograph she considers the centre of the archive.
- A sealed envelope contains a contact sheet of a doorway she cannot locate.
- Sandro leaves a recorder running while she finally tells her own version of leaving.
